If you've ever wondered how I usually draw and get my inspiration, I think this picture sums it up pretty well. And in case you think I'm exaggerating, please see the photo below:

I've Got Sunshine On A Cloudy Day
Some days just suck. But Sunny always makes things at least a little better. She's my "sunshine" (ha! get it?) on my cloudy days. I like to imagine that she knows that I work so hard for both of us and appreciates it.
In reality I think her thoughts are more like "Kibble, kibble, kibble, baby carrots, baby carrots, pee, poo, orange bunny, nap, itchy, pee, blue koala, nap, human!, pet me, nap, pet me, feed me, what's that smell?, pee, poo, itchy, itchy, orange bunny, zzzzzzzzzz."

Worst Enemies
In contrast to last week's best friends drawing, here is a situation when pugs become each other's worst enemy. Any time food is involved all love and affection instantly turns off. It's every pug for him/herself, and any other pug is instantly competition. For an animal that loves food so much, you would think they'd eat a little neater and not let precious kibble fall into enemy territory.

Pug and Human Best Friends
See I told you I had a happy drawing coming up today! So in continuation of the best friends theme from yesterday, I decided to do a version with me and Sunny because of course we're best friends. In fact we are BFFL (best friends for life)!
Lonely
Not to be a Debbie Downer on a Friday but this week's Illustration Friday topic is "Lonely" and so of course this drawing isn't going to be sunshine and roses.
My mind immediately jumped to shelter dogs and how sad, lonely, and confused they must feel sitting in their caged rooms. Modern dogs have mostly been bred to be companions to humans so it must be especially heartbreaking for them to be stuck in these cold rooms filled with strange dogs and with no affection. My sister rescued a pug from a high kill shelter once and I remember her telling me about how the pug sat facing one wall and leaning against another with her eyes closed, almost like she'd given up. That image has stuck with me since then. So for all of you who have rescued a pet, Sunny and I thank you!
Sheesh sorry I didn't mean to get all sad Sarah McLachlan SPCA commercial on you! I promise I have a happy drawing coming up later today!

Pug Best Friends
Here's a simple sketch of two pug best buds hanging out together. No particular reason - just felt like doodling a simple sketch of a quiet moment.
Pee Mail
Often when Sunny is taking FOREVER to sniff every inch of grass in the morning I wonder what it must be like to smell the way she does. I've heard of the phrase "pee mail" before and usually my mind immediately jumps to little letters dotted all around the grass with messages for Sunny from the other dogs. And sometimes she comes across a really good letter and can't stop rereading it. Eventually Sunny "mails" her own letter for other dogs and we can finally head inside. Of course I'm always running late due to all this pee mail business but how can I deny Sunny from keeping up to date with her correspondence?

Sitting Like A Lady
Second to Sunny's general appearance and snorts, I probably get the most amount of comments about the way she sits. I have never seen her sit normally like most other dogs. Instead she does the classic pug slump with her chicken legs sloppily sticking out to the front or sides. Like a true lady!

Pampered Pug Problems
Once they get a good home with lots of love, toys, and food, our pampered pugs have a unique set of "problems."

Eeny, Meeny, Miny, Moe...
Hmm I don't think it's a good idea to actually catch a tiger by his toe! Poor little Moe. I imagine that Eeny, Meeny, and Miny dared him to grab the tiger's toe. They probably triple pug dared him!
Because this was a two-pager in my sketchbook it's a bit big here but I wanted it big enough for the text to come out clearly.

Jack Be Nimble
c.creativity commented on my last post of Jack and Jill, asking about a pug interpretation of Jack Be Nimble and how a pug would jump over the candlestick. So this is my response!
Now I know there are a bunch of pugs that are actually quite active and agile (there are agility pugs out there!), and even Sunny has her energetic spry moments. But most pugs I've known (including Sunny) really do love to nap and can be super lazy and stubborn at times. So this lil pug might need a little help "jumping" over the candlestick.

Jack and Jill
After I ran out of children's songs and dances, my sister suggested Jack and Jill. There are no cute pug dances here, but at least there are some chubby pugs tumbling down.

Guardian Pugs
Given the background of the pug, I thought it only fitting that I do a drawing of them like the Chinese guardian lion statutes. Unfortunately, I think they look a little less fierce than the lion versions but if I ever have a palace, I will for sure have these pug statutes at the entryway!

Lost
I don't know if it's because I'm a cold-hearted meanie, but I love it when I go to the kitchen or bathroom and Sunny loses track of where I am and starts searching for me. I never start this on purpose but as soon as I see her fast trot to the other rooms and peeking in I know what's up and I like to prolong it a bit more because she looks so darn cute searching for me! I have an island in my kitchen and we'll often go around it in circles. But she's pretty smart and I have to stay quick on my feet because she changes directions sometimes! I never do this more than a minute or two but because I know how desperately she searches for me when she thinks she's lost me, I always make sure she clearly sees me when I actually do leave the apartment. And a couple treats left in her bowl and in a treat ball help ease the separation anxiety!

Lend Me A Hand
Any time my pug is sleepy (which is 80% of the time) if my hand or arm strays anywhere near her chin she will plop her chin down and trap me as her chin rest. Of course since I'm wrapped around her little paw I will stay frozen as her chin rest until she moves usually.
Peeping Pug
Sometimes when I'm getting changed Sunny comes into my room and just watches me. She's my little peeping Tom pug, see?

A Pug's Game of Thrones
Sometimes I feel like my lap is not my own. It belongs to Sunny. She will barge onto my lap and legs, any chance she can get. I imagine if pugs ruled the world, they wouldn't sit in regular uncomfortable thrones. They would have human thrones, with nice comfy and squishy laps, and humans would cater to their every desire. Wait....maybe pugs do rule this world??
Two Pugs Passing in The Night
Today Sunny and I ran into another pug during our evening walk. They spotted each other about 20 feet apart and both stood and stared at the other, with one paw frozen mid-air. This lasted for a few minutes and then Sunny started moving forward in slow motion. Step. Step. Step. Finally, Sunny ended the stare-off and sprinted towards the other pug and they did their intros (aka butt sniffs). This is how Sunny approaches all dogs she's intrigued by (especially pugs), but I loved seeing another pug do the exact same thing at the same time! I knew I had to draw this and then the phrase "two ships passing in the night" just popped into my head. So here are two pugs passing in the night, each doing the frozen stop and stare, with a paw up.

Dog Days of Summer
Holy moly this east coast heat wave is killing me and Sunny! Neither of us handles heat very well and so we're just trying to stay in air conditioning as much as possible until it gets a teensy bit cooler later this week.

Pugs and Kisses - Happy Gotcha Day Sunny!
Yesterday was Sunny's second gotcha day anniversary! Two years ago on July 7th, I picked her up and welcomed her into my home and heart. We celebrated yesterday with some yummy human food treats and if you're in the mood for seeing lots of pictures of a chubby pug chowing down on random food check out my Lil Smug Pug post here! I think Sunny thoroughly enjoyed yesterday, but now I think she expected the same treats this morning. Hmm, I hope I didn't create a bad habit...

No Room to Swing a Cat
Pug is testing the room size. She wants to make sure she has enough room to swing a cat. If she doesn't, then that would be bad news for that poor cat suspended in air, so let's hope she's in a spacious area.

Apple of My Eye
It's been a while since I've done an idiom drawing. In the meantime, I have mangled many just in my day to day conversations with people (why do I keep trying to use them when I know I always mess them up?). Anyways, today I wanted to draw the apple of my eye - my lil pug!
The Ant And The Grasshopper
If the ant and the grasshopper were actually pugs, then they would have both spent the harvest season being lazy and dozing.

Refresh
This is for this week's Illustration Friday theme "refresh." These pugs sure know the best way to stay cool and refreshed during this heat wave!
