First Love

I was approached recently by Karys, an Australian girl living in London and working as a photography assistant and freelance writer/editor, to contribute to her blog, Something Fine, a project based around the idea of first love.  I was happy to participate but I warned Karys that my contribution would be pug-based since that's how we roll here at Bah Humpug!

My mind immediately jumped to my first pug, Cookie.  I had joint custody of her with my sister when I was in high school.  She was the sweetest and gentlest pug and, for a random fact, she had the softest ears EVER.  Just because I have Sunny now doesn't mean that Cookie is forgotten, but it also doesn't mean that I loved Cookie more than I love Sunny now because she was my first pug.  I will always love and miss Cookie, but there's plenty of room in my heart for both Cookie and Sunny (and any future pugs in my life...).

  2. Hi,
I love your site. I discovered you a couple of weeks ago, and your drawings really brighten up my day!
I especially love today's. I have just got a new puppy, Bronte, after losing our dear Dylan last November.
I was worried I was "replacing" him and I worry I will forget him. But that's not the case. It is exactly true what you say- there is room for both.
And though they are both the same breed, they are so very different.

  3. What is it with Pug ears being so velvety and their feet smelling like Doritos? Pugs just wriggle their way into your hearts and make room for more.

  4. Aw thanks everyone! When I first got Sunny I was so worried I wouldn't love her as much as my first pug, Cookie! And I have to admit that at first I compared Sunny to Cookie a lot in my head, but now I've come to fully appreciate their separate personalities and quirks. My lil Cookie monster and Sunny bunny will always have a place in my heart and will be there to welcome any future pugs!

  5. I love your blog and esp this drawing. I lost my first pug last year and wasn't sure I could feel the same about another one. Now I have a second, and while he can never fill my first baby's paws, I'm so happy to have that love back in my life. Thank you!
