Seal Pug

Today I am doing three posts because I feel like it and I probably won't have any new ones for the next few days due to a friend's visit. If I were a normal and patient person I would schedule my posts in advance, spaced out evenly, but unfortunately I am neither of those things.

One of my favorite pug poses is when Sunny is super relaxed and drops her ears so her wrinkles get smoothed out. My sister and I refer to this as seal pup or baby pug. I know a lot of pug people have noticed and commented on the seal pup face and so of course I had to draw a side by side comparison!

We're Sexy And We Know It

I don't know if it's from all the litters Sunny had in the past, but she has what my mom calls a "sexy walk", which is how she walks with her butt going side to side like a sashaying model on the runway. She also loves rolling over and showing anyone and everyone her lady parts.

These pugs, like Sunny, are sexy and they know it! See their bored model-y expressions?

The Pugs and The Wolf

These collared pugs don't agree with this starving, yet free, wolf. A pug's #1 priority is to make sure it gets fed and fed well! I also don't think pugs are capable of living on their own in the wild anyways. With their smushed faces, bulging and often scratched eyes, floppy ears prone to infections, wrinkles that need regular cleaning, need for regular feedings, and constant desire for human attention and affection, I think pugs are just not meant to live in the wild.

Moral: A full belly is worth ANYTHING to a pug.

Stealth Mode

Sometimes I like to imagine what it would be like if pugs lived in the wild. Unfortunately, pugs are so far removed from their wild ancestors and they make so many noises (out of both ends), I don't think they would do very well on their own. However, they would be excellent at finding the nearest human with food and looking appropriately sad and pathetic until they were fed. That's their survival tactic!

The Pug in Borrowed Feathers

This lil pug is strutting around in some borrowed feathers, not realizing that the peacocks not only see through her act, but also think she's a weirdo.

Moral: Borrowed fine feathers do not make pugs into fine birds (duh).

The Town Pug And The Country Pug

Here we have a country pug and a town pug. The country pug may enjoy the simpler foods and pleasures in life but he does it in relative safety compared to the rich but dangerous life of the town pug. Although going back to the original fable, I think a mouse has it pretty risky either way. I have one word for the supposedly safe country mouse - OWLS. Anyways getting back to these pugs, I drew these mainly because I've been looking for an excuse to draw a pug in overalls or fancified with an ascot, top hat, and monocle! (obviously Monopoly and Scrooge McDuck were big parts of my childhood). But really, if town pug is so fancy, then where are his pants? (answer: see above reference to Scrooge McDuck).

Moral: Poverty with security is better than plenty in the midst of fear and with no pants.

The Fox And The Grapes (Pug Version)

This lil fox pug is trying his hardest to reach those tasty grapes!  Well lil fox pug, it's actually a good thing you can't reach them because grapes are toxic to dogs!  But I bet this lil fox pug won't give up and will forever remember the exact spot where these grapes are so that he can return to them over and over again, and then show them to you and demand that you rescue the bunch for him.  Don't do it!

Moral: It is easy for pugs to forever remember food they cannot get.

The Tortoise And The Hare (Pug Version)

When I was little I had a book of beautifully illustrated Aesop's fables.  Any time I was bored and out of new reading materials, I loved to flip through the book and reread some of my favorite ones.  I thought it would be fun to draw some of my favorite fables, pug style of course!  So here is my depiction of The Tortoise and the Hare.  The tortoise pug and hare pug didn't have that far to race but after their initial burst of energy and some pugtonas, they quickly petered out and decided to take a nap.

Moral: Slow and steady, makes pugs sleepy.

No Concept of Personal Space

Pugs have no concept of personal space. I can be sitting on the very edge of my couch and Sunny has to be smashed right into my side. I can't even move without her giving me stink eye for bothering her comfy pose. Forget about sneezing - that'll give me a good solid 30 second death glare. And of course...I love it. She's my velcro dog!

Cold Shoulder (Pug Version)

Never make a pug mad. You run the risk of getting the cold shoulder, pug version. I also encounter this view about 85% of the times I wake up for some reason. My sisters and I always call this getting the unfun end. It's especially unfun if the pug is gassy.

Summer Days

Sunny and I are very compatible. One example of our compatibility is that we both have extreme heat intolerance. We prefer strongly air conditioned indoors during the hot summer months. I never understood how other people could be frolicking in the extreme heat and humidity. I've even seen people wearing long sleeves and pants! No thank you. Sunny and I will be inside setting the thermostat super low.

Pug Gymnast

A lot of people have commented on how Sunny sits. I think probably 99.9% of the time that she sits it's in the classic pug slump. The pug slump is hunched over with the legs going straight out or slightly to the side. Like so:

You can also see her persistent but smart begging (humans can't get to the fridge without her knowledge). I've often thought this lazy pose resembles the athletic pose gymnasts strike on the balance beam where they use their core strength to lift themselves up with their legs out. So here's a gymnast pug using her core strength (hahaha! Pugs and core strength in the same sentence??) on the balance beam.

Little Pug of Horrors

This past weekend my mom and sister kept telling me how chubby Sunny was looking. I try to be good about her diet but she can look so sad and pathetic when she wants food! Plus, I switched her to a protein rich food recently and I think it's partly to blame for the weight gain until I figure out the right portion for her. That made me think of Audrey II from Little Shop of Horrors. Thankfully Sunny doesn't demand that I feed her blood and humans, but she can be pretty demanding when it comes to kibble and baby carrots.

Row, Row, Row Your Boat

Row, row, row your boat,
Gently down the stream.
Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily,
Life is but a dream.

Advantage to Having a Pug #7

#7 - Guaranteed secret keeper.

If you have any secrets that you're dying to tell someone have no fear, pugs (any dog or pet actually) make the best secret keepers! You can tell them anything and they'll keep your secret safe!

This is also my drawing for this week's Illustration Friday topic "secret."

Twinkle Twinkle Little Pug

Twinkle twinkle little pug. My sister suggested this one since she pointed out that pugs kind of have star shaped bodies (so this is dedicated to her!). Look there's a shooting star pug!

Vets Get No Pug Love

I love love my vet. Everyone there is so nice and caring and they all love Sunny. Sunny, unfortunately, does not love the vet. She likes the individual people working there, but she hates what they do to her there. Every time Sunny has to have a shot, eye drops/stain, or her nether regions' glands expressed, she tries to squirm out with all her might until she becomes a big squished ball of fur. Imagine trying to fit a square peg in a round hole and that's how Sunny looks as she tries to wriggle out of my arms, but with a lot more fat and fur. She also sheds like crazy and makes these weird snorting honking sounds. It's tragically hilarious.

Pug Evolution

Pugs are so advanced, they evolve in the span of one day. Of course they quickly devolve and go through this process repeatedly throughout the day with a heavy emphasis on phases one and five.

Puggoyles

These puggoyles are keeping watch over the city, although I don't know if they are really capable of scaring anyone.  Maybe their power is that they distract people with their cuteness?

Chicken Dance

Here's a pug showing you the complicated moves for the chicken dance.  I was running out of dances to draw and Boodapug suggested the chicken dance!  While there aren't really words to go with this I figured I could just do the "nanananananana" sounds for the song part.

Red Rover

All of the children's songs I've been doing recently made me think of other things from my childhood.  One of my favorite games when I was really little was Red Rover.  Do kids still play that nowadays?  I can still remember that feeling of anxiety and dread as soon I realized that the person who we called over was heading straight to one of the barriers with my arms.  So here are some pugs playing Red Rover, with a red Rover.

Shiny

This is for this week's Illustration Friday topic "shiny."  I swear that anytime I eat something Sunny's eyes get bigger, sadder, and shinier.  It's a lot like when Puss in Boots makes his sad face.  I can practically see myself selfishly eating in the pools of her eyes.

Pug Ring Around The Rosy

These pugs are having a blast doing ring around the rosy!  I had thought of this song earlier but was reluctant to draw it at first since there's not really that many movements to this - it's just dancing around in a circle and then sitting down.  But the more I thought about it the more I thought it would be fun to have frolicking pugs dancing around in a circle and then plopping down to sleep.  Also it's so perfect for pugs!  Sunny is capable of great energy and action but not for extended periods of time.  And any additional energy she exerts gets compensated with even more napping time later in the day.  So here are some happy pugs having a blast dancing around in a circle, followed by a good ol pug nap at the end.

Itsy Bitsy Spider Pug

Here's a lil pug doing The Itsy Bitsy Spider!  This is the last children's song I could think of with accompanying dance/movements.  I'll try to think of others, but sadly nothing comes to mind so far.

I tried my best to show the pug doing the spider climbing with her paws, but pugs lack the finger dexterity and thumbs (their declaws are nothing but another pair of nails I have to trim).

Lil Pug Teapot

I've had old songs from my childhood stuck in my head since I did the Pug Hokey Pokey yesterday and wanted to do another one.  I couldn't remember that many that have accompanying dances/movements, but of course I had to do I'm A Little Teapot.  Sunny is very short and stout!

The Pug Hokey Pokey

Here's a pug showing us how to do the hokey pokey.  I used to love the hokey pokey as a kid, especially when they did it at the roller rink (do they even have those anymore?!).  And isn't everything more fun with a pug?  Yes.  Always.

Pool Pugs

I know that there are some pugs that enjoy the water, but all the pugs I've personally known hate the water, whether it's falling from the sky or on the ground.  So unlike the retrievers that are enjoying the water, these three pugs make very poor swimmers since they refuse to jump into the pool (even with goggles and life vests).

Pugs Have No Shame

Sunny has no shame. She loves showing off her goodies to everyone. Sometimes I debate whether to post certain pictures of Sunny because she looks cute or funny but her lady bits are exposed and waving hi to the camera. I usually just post them because I figure if Sunny doesn't care then I don't care!

Bed Hog

True story - Last night I woke up shivering and discovered that my blanket was folded over to the side with my fat pug perched on top. I tried pulling out the blanket from under her but Sunny is too heavy and I was weak from being so tired and sleepy. After one last surge of energy I finally got the blanket out from under her, but Sunny was so mad at me and we grumbled at each other as we both tried to settle back into sleep. So which one of us is the bed hog?

Sunbathing

Pugs sure do love sunbathing!  I hope this pug put on plenty of sunblock, because that's one skimpy bikini!

Cyclipugs

These cyclipugs are enjoying their tandem bike, but (tsk, tsk) they're not wearing bike helmets!

I thought of this drawing during my long run on Saturday.  I see a ton of cyclists on the trails and most of them are high speed.  Of course I knew pugs wouldn't be like that - I think of pugs more as leisurely cyclists, on tandem bikes, unicycles (I have seen a unicyclist on a trail once!), or those old school early 20th century  tall bikes.  Maybe more cyclipug drawings will follow soon!

Hurry!!

This is for this week's Illustration Friday topic "hurry!" My pug is never as fast as when she senses me coming to take something yummy/interesting away. A leisurely sniff can turn into a lighting fast gobble as soon as I rush towards her to take something away. Yesterday it was a potato chip I had dropped. She snarfed that down quickly and was then super thirsty afterwards. Sigh. Pugs, can't live with them, certainly can't live without them!
